If you feel like something is missing from your life, consider getting a cat. So many cats could use a great home. Simply bring one home, make a friend for the rest of the cat’s life, and use the advice in this article.

Any drape cords should be hidden so the cat cannot grab hold of them. Do not let your cat play with these. If the cords are in loops and the cat jumps into them or plays with them, they could possibly get them caught around their neck. This is incredibly dangerous as it could be fatal for your cat. Make sure that the cords are completely out of sight.

Cats really enjoy squeezing into any and all small spaces. If they have a collar on, this might prove to be a safety risk if they happen to get stuck. Breakaway collars will “break” if they’re pulled too tight. This will allow your cat to live another day if it gets tangled up.

Don’t use dog products on your cats ever. Cats have very strong, negative reactions to products formulated for dogs. This particularly applies to flea products. Your cat can die if you use a dog flea product on it. Keep them separated by at least one door for a few hours after treatment.

If your cat ventures outdoors, it’s key to get your cat a collar which has a contact tag. If your cat gets lost during its time outdoors, a tag makes it easier to locate the animal. The tag should contain the pet’s name, your phone number and your name as well.

Your cat probably spends a lot of time grooming himself to perfection. When your cat has long hair, this can cause hairballs. One way to alleviate this condition in your cat is by feeding him special food. Some foods contain extra oils and nutrients, specifically designed to prevent or diminish hairball concerns.

Put a cloth down in your cat’s eating area. Some cats like removing food from their bowl and eating it beside their bowl. That means you will have to tidy up the food left beside the cat bowl. You can also use any type of mat underneath your cat’s eating apparatus to reduce the mess.

Cats love to be high up. To keep your cat healthy, provide your cat with a high place to sit. You can use a cleared shelf if you’d rather not have a cat tree. You could even place a small bed or blanket on the shelf to make your cat feel more comfortable.

If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, you should take him to the vet. For instance, it may be a sign the cat has a problem with its urinary tract. It could be the sign of other issues as well. Some inexpensive antibiotics can clear up a potentially dangerous illness.

If you notice that your cat has stopped using its litter box, you’ll want to contact your vet. Health problems may be causing your cat to urinate in places other than their litter box. Issues like a kidney infection are often behind such behaviors. If your pet stops using the litter box then see your veterinarian.

Put a collar on the cat that lists your name, address, and phone number on it. An indoor cat should also have a tag with this information because he or she can sometimes escape. If this happens, ensure there’s a way they can find home again.

Cats’ powerful olfactory abilities mean that they can smell changes in their home. This is why it is sometimes difficult to get them to use something new, like a bowl or cat toy. Don’t let this discourage you. After your cat adjusts to the new scent, they’ll be more interested in the new object.

Giving your love and attention to a cat is an admirable pursuit. You’ve given it a safe home in which it is loved. Your cat and you will having a lifelong bond. Take care of him and he will do the same for you.
