Cats are very loving and fun animals. Adopt one and you should soon find yourself spending many happy hours playing with it. You may also want to contribute to their play time with fun toys and activities. That doesn’t mean shelling out for expensive toys, either. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to better days.

Prevent your cats from playing with drapery cords. If the cat becomes caught in a loop, they could choke to death. They could be seriously hurt or even killed. Keep all drape cords out of reach as a preventative measure.

Check with your shelter before you purchase a cat. Many shelters are overcrowded with lovable and adoptable cats. When you bring home a shelter cat, you will be saving its life and you will be doing your part to help out.

A tagged collar is essential if you let your cat outside regularly. Tags can save you a lot of trouble if your cat gets lost. Ensure that you at least put the name of your cat and your personal phone number on this tag.

Prevent your cat from chewing on electrical cords by spraying bitter apple on them. If they like to chew on cords, try covering them as much as you can. Loose cords can be bundled and tucked inside old paper towel rolls. Electronic items with tasty-looking, thin cords (video game controllers, phone chargers, and so on) should be stored securely when you’re not using them.

Consider having your cat fitted with a microchip. You never know when your cat could get away from you. Although they provide the information needed to find your beloved pet, they can also accidentally get caught or even be wiggled out of. A microchip, on the other hand, is inserted near your cat’s shoulder blades, takes only a second to do, and all of your current contact info can be read through the chip. All shelters and vets have scanners to ensure your cat gets home safely.

If you’re taking a trip with your cat, be sure to protect its ears. You may love loud music, bit it might be bothering your cat. If your cat seems upset or agitated, turn down the music and speak calmly to him.

Make a tablecloth for your cats. Sometimes cats prefer to remove food from their bowls and eat it from the floor. Sometimes this will make the area around the bowl messy, and you’ll have to clean it. Put a placemat under the bowl, or even some fabric so cleaning up is a snap.

Cats enjoy climbing on things. For a truly happy cat, provide a safe place for your cat to survey his surroundings. If you can’t afford a cat tree, give the cat an empty shelf of his own. The cat will especially enjoy it if you put a blanket on top.

Feed your cat a few different varieties of food. This can help him not get too finicky. If they only eat the same food, they may never eat another food in the future.

Consider the placement of your cat’s litter box. Do not hide the box simply to reduce the smell. However, the litter box must be kept in a location that is easily accessible for your pet. Cats can be picky, so you should be sure that you put its litter box in a spot that isn’t difficult to access or unpleasant in some other way. Keeping litter boxes on cement floors that are cold can be remedied by placing a rug or mat under it.

Chemicals that have phenol in the should not be used around a cat. Lysol and Pine-Sol are two examples of products that contain this chemical. The smell from this chemical is disliked by cats. Also, when exposed to phenol for too long, it can cause issues with their liver.

Do you love playing with your cat? Not every cat is the same, so that means you may have to pick and choose some of the tips you read to try on your cat. Playing with your cat will help them to not only have fun, but will give them the exercise that they need.
