Like humans, cats require many things, even a proper diet. In the absence of such a dietary plan, cats will become malnourished or overweight. This article will give you advice on how to properly feed and care for your cat.

When looking for a new cat for your home, contact a local animal shelter. Shelters all over the country are crowded with marvelous cats, and most provide veterinarian care with the adoption fee. Taking a cat home with you means that a life has been saved.

You should make sure your cat stays groomed properly. You should comb and/or brush them on a regular basis. If yu do this quite often, it will help them stay clean. It helps your cats shed much less too, which keeps them from spitting those hairballs up. Brushing your cat will keep your home cleaner, too.

If your cat is getting older, you can increase it’s comfort by placing its bed over a heated tile. Put a square foot of terra cotta tile into your oven heated to 200 degrees. Keep the tile in the oven for about 15 minutes. Use an old towel to wrap it up safely before placing it beneath your cat’s favorite napping spot. You can even switch it out every few hours.

Never let a cat become bored. Cats need play and exercise. This is sadly overlooked by some cat owners. Bored cats can become depressed and inactive, causing harm to their well-being. Provide them with space to exercise and lots of toys to play with. Indoor cats will appreciate having a structure they can climb on or a dedicated scratching post.

Cats are partially nocturnal. Your cat will probably be very active during the night. If your busy kitties are keeping you up into the wee hours, try simply closing your bedroom door. This will keep them from pouncing on you and trying to play in the middle of the night.

The correct location is important when picking a spot for a cat’s litter box. The litter box should not be kept in an area with a lot of traffic. In addition, it does not need to be near the cat’s food. Allow for adequate ventilation to dispel any odors. Your cat and you will prefer this in the end.

If you take your cat with you when you travel, be mindful of their ears. Cats tend to prefer gentle sounds during the day. If your cat seems upset or agitated, turn down the music and speak calmly to him.

Try to figure out the cause if you find your cat meowing excessively. By paying attention, you should eventually learn why your cat is meowing. Maybe she wants to go out, or maybe she wants to eat. Look for the cues and you’ll be much more in tune with your pet.

Be careful when leaving your cat with your children. This is especially true if your child is less than five years old. You may not have noticed a problem when you see them together, but very kids do not really understand they can accidentally harm or kill a kitten. As your children get older, you can decide when to teach them about handling a pet.

Brush your cat regularly. This can help spread their fur’s natural oils around and stimulate blood flow to their skin. In addition, it helps to reduce loose hair. This helps to stop hairballs and their associated medical problems.

Do not punish your cat if they make a mess in the area outside of the litter box. Improper box care on your part causes the mess, not the cat. If you attempt to punish your pet, you may cause fear and resentment–and more accidents!

Your cat’s diet is very important to the overall state of his health. Eating the wrong foods or not eating enough or too much can shorten your cat’s life span. Choose the cat food you use for your pet very carefully.
