Why wouldn’t you save the life of an animal if you could? There are literally millions of cats who are stuck in shelters through no fault of their own, and they need a loving forever home. The first step is adopting, and the second is learning to care for it.
Cats enjoy finding small spaces to fit into. If you keep a collar on your pet, getting stuck in one of these spaces can be very dangerous. If your pet is wearing a breakaway collar, it’ll detach if it’s pulled too hard. This could help save your cat if it gets caught in a tight spot.
Don’t use dog products on your cats ever. Cats usually react negatively to items made especially for dogs. This definitely applies to flea products. Flea products meant for dogs can seriously harm or kill a cat. In fact, it is a good idea to separate your cat and dog for a few hours after your dog has taken flea medication.
Your cat needs attention and a lot of affection. Cats are looking for a response in kind in exchange for all of the friendly companionship they offer to humans. Similar to people, cats like to socialize and feel as if they are important to their family. They probably would like to feel as though they are a wanted part of the family.
Do you have dogs and cats? Dogs will always try to eat a cat’s food. This makes it a good idea to have a cat feeding place high up enough that your dog can’t get to it. That also means they don’t fight about water after eating the food.
Don’t think that you can teach a cat to use its litter box. This is natural to them and does not need to be taught. A lot of people think that they can take their cat and try to rub their cat’s paws on the litter, but this may just traumatize the cat.
If you offer a variety of foods to your cat, it will be less picky about what it eats. If your cat only eats one brand of cat food from the beginning, he will probably not like any other brand.
Provide your cat with canned food rather than dry. It is usually more expensive than dry food, but it is more beneficial. Canned food will give your cat more water, fat and protein. It’s also much softer on older teeth if your cat is getting up there in years. Go ahead and talk to your vet, but canned food is favorable for cats.
Long-haired breeds are pretty, but understand how much work they are before you get one. Even though that nice coat of beautiful silky fur looks great, it can leave a mess on your floors, furniture and clothing. Do not choose a long-haired cat unless you can commit to the added cleanup. You should keep in mind that long haired cats are more prone to hairballs.
Keep your cat’s vaccinations and checkups up to date with the vet. Just like with having kids, young cats need to be checked on to see if they’re doing okay from time to time. It also needs its shots so that you can avoid problems later on down the road. Remember that the four-pawed members of your family need healthcare just as much as the ones that walk on two feet.
Check your cat if they suddenly stop using their litter-box. Health problems may be causing your cat to urinate in places other than their litter box. A urinary infection or a kidney problem could be responsible for your cat’s behavior. Call your veterinarian right away if your cat doesn’t use the litter box.
Successfully caring for a cat is a difficult but rewarding thing. You’re offering your home and love to an animal that desperately needs it. You will develop a strong bond with your cat that will last a lifetime. Properly caring for your cat will ensure that this loving bond remains intact.
